Scenes from IC Grade School's Catholic Schools' Week
Across the nation, our country’s Catholic grade schools and high schools celebrated national Catholic Schools’ Week from January 29th to February 3rd. At Immaculate Conception Grade School in Elmhurst, the week entailed a number of activities and events. On the evening of Thursday, February 2nd, parents of ICGS students were invited to visit school and see what their children have been working on. First, a band demonstration took place in IC’s Monsignor Plunkett Hall. There, ICGS Band Director, Mr. Andrew Szymanski and members of the beginner and advanced bands showed parents how they typically prepare for a concert. Afterward, the ICGS Curriculum Fair took place in the school building. Students were invited to bring their parents to their classrooms where various projects were showcased. Projects ranged from solar system models in fourth grade to elaborate depictions of World War II battlefields, Pearl Harbor and models of aspects of Ancient Egyptian life in sixth grade. Teachers and staff were on hand to visit with parents and students.
The following morning, ICGS’ celebration of national Catholic Schools’ Week culminated with the presentation of the ICGS Distinguished Graduate Award after Friday morning mass. IC’s pastor, Father Tom Paul announced that two teachers at ICGS, Mrs. Marcia May (2nd grade) and Mrs. Jane Baker (7th grade) were being given this award. Both women graduated from ICGS. Mrs. Marcia May has taught at ICGS for the past fifteen years and Mrs. Jane Baker for the past six years. After the award ceremony, the congregation had their throats blessed, a Catholic tradition on the feast of St. Blaise. During this blessing, two candles are blessed, held slightly open and pressed against the throat as a prayer is said.
In addition, on Friday, February 3rd, the ICGS Kindergarteners celebrated their 100th day of school.
