Drumming up history

Elgin Community College’s DJEMBE club, which stands for Drummers Joined in the Education Movement through Beats and Entertainment, held a drum circle Tuesday in honor of Black History Month.

The group used African jembe drums, a cow bell and other percussion to play beats in the school’s Jobe Lounge as students ate lunch. Audience members were invited to drum with the group.

Student Nicholas Metzger, 21, of Elgin, started the club this year because of his interest in drumming.

“I thought it would be a good outlet to get kids who aren’t interested in clubs to join a club,” he said.
