A 12-year-old Elgin girl was injured Monday after she was struck by an SUV as she crossed the street, police said Tuesday.

About 7 p.m., the girl was crossing State Street through six lanes of traffic when she was hit by the northbound vehicle that had a green light, police said.

The girl was initially taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin for “significant injuries,” police said. Since then, she’s been transferred to Lutheran General in Park Ridge. Her condition Tuesday afternoon was unknown.

Kimball and State streets were closed for more than two hours while police worked at the scene.

Police said charges or citations are not expected, but the investigation continues. Anyone with information can call 847-289-2700.
