Party crowd, disappointed over band switch, throws items on stage

One man was hospitalized and others were injured after an Elgin party crowd turned violent when the band they thought was going to perform was replaced last minute by another act.

Shortly after midnight Sunday, police officers responded to La Movida Banquet Hall, 850 N. State St., finding guests and members of a Chicago band with cuts to their heads and faces, according to a police report and La Movida Manager Baldo Aguilar.

Aguilar said the crowd – about 500 guests of a private Quinceanera party – was upset because the band they hired to perform with a singer from Mexico was not there. Instead The Dorados Show band of Chicago came to perform in their place. Aguilar and police did not know the name of the original band hired.

The replacement band “didn’t know a few songs they had asked them to play. That’s when they found out it wasn’t the right band,” Aguilar said.

At that point one member of the crowd threw a bottle on stage, according to the police report, which led to the throwing of chairs and other items. People also began to storm the stage.

Aguilar said his security called 911, but the fight had calmed down by the time officers arrived.

One man was taken to Sherman Hospital for treatment. Police could not locate those throwing the items, so no one was arrested.

Aguilar said it was unusual to have a fight of that caliber break out at the facility.

Sgt. Glenn Theriault said while police have had to respond to the hall in the past, “it’s not at the top of our radar.”
