Two charged in marijuana growing operations

Two Elgin men face charges after police allegedly found two separate marijuana growing operations in their homes in searches prompted by neighbor complaints of a marijuana smell.

Robert D. Williams, 43, and Mathew J Moraca, 35, each are charged with unlawful production of cannabis plants. Moraca also faces one count each of unlawful manufacturing/delivery of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Members of Elgin’s drug unit last Sunday allegedly found 31 plants at Williams’ home in the 300 block of Cassidy Lane. Investigators estimate the street value of the plants to be around $15,000.

On Monday, officers searched Moraca’s home in the 200 block of Perry Street, allegedly finding another marijuana grow operation, which included 241 plants, 209 grams of processed marijuana and some ecstasy pills. Police estimate the street value of the drugs to be $75,000.

Moraca’s bail was set at $600,000 and Williams’ was set at $60,000. Both remain in Kane County jail.
