Soccer coaches, bowlers, teachers and friends came out last week to help raise more than $3,000 at Nick’s Pizza and Pub in Elgin for a 16-year-old man in need of a double lung transplant.

“It was overwhelming,” said Melissa White, a teacher at Horizon Elementary in Hanover Park, of the event held to help cover the costs associated with relocating her family to St. Louis when the time comes for her son, Greg’s operation. The transplant will be done at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

“There were so many different people from so many different facets of life,” she said. “It was very heartwarming.”

Greg White was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis shortly after his birth. Today, he has just 20 percent of his lung function. White is a sophomore at Larkin High School in Elgin, but can no longer attend classes due to his health.

Erin Barham, a teacher at Horizon and community organizer of the White’s fundraising efforts, said there will be more events to help the White family.

Another event will be held at Nick’s the first week of March. A silent auction will be held March 3, at the Elgin Turners Club, 112 Villa St. The evening will cost $25 and include appetizers and performances by students from School District U-46.

This week Longaberger Baskets is sponsoring an online party in White’s name. Twenty percent of proceeds will go to the family.

Event information is available on Greg White’s website www.cotaforgregw.com.
