No one was hurt in a late Wednesday morning fire in Elgin, apparently caused by a Christmas tree.
Firefighters responded to the fire in the 1300 block of Sheffield Drive around 11:49 a.m., finding the tri-level, single-family home’s living room engulfed in flames, said Battalion Chief Timothy Michaels.
Residents of the home escaped without harm after trying to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher and a garden hose, stretched from outside the house, he said. Firefighters put out the fire in about 20 minutes, and also saved three dogs and a lizard from the home.
The homeowners told firefighters their Christmas tree somehow caught fire, Michaels said.
The house is now uninhabitable with extensive heat and smoke damage throughout, he said. The living room was “completely destroyed.”
Michaels warned residents to keep a close watch on live Christmas trees, and to not place them near any items that may spark.
“Live Christmas trees, they’re very combustible,” he said. “Nobody got hurt that’s all that matters.”
