A Chicago man has been charged with murder after allegedly killing a homeless man in Elgin with a fire extinguisher, according to police.
Yancarlo Garcia, 23, of the 1100 block of North Lawndale, is accused of throwing a fire extinguisher from the top of a parking deck at 245 Fulton St. about 1:40 a.m. Aug. 11 striking Richard Gibbons, 60, who was sleeping in an alley below, police said.
Gibbons sustained injuries to the abdomen and died Sept. 4 at Lutheran General Hospital.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the death a homicide.
Police say they found evidence at the scene linking Garcia to the crime. He has been charged with first degree murder and is being held at Cook County jail on an unrelated charge.
“This was a senseless crime of a defenseless man,” Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said in a news release. “It’s particularly sad when someone decides to randomly harm another who posed no imminent threat to anyone.”
