Elgin-based School District U-46 already was prepared to re-institute a moment of silence when a court lifted an injunction this morning.
District administrators sent principals a memo Thursday advising that once the ban lifted they must incorporate 15 seconds of silence into the day. They recommended doing so before or after the Pledge of Allegiance, according to Patrick Broncato, chief legal officer.
State lawmakers instituted the mandatory moment of silence in 2007, but in a subsequent legal challenge a district court issued an injunction stopping the practice.
In October, a federal appeals court in Chicago overturned the lower court and ruled the law is constitutional. Today, the district court lifted its injunction.
