IUN receives $39K in grants from IU, national foundations

Indiana University Northwest was recently awarded three grants, totaling $39,000, that will help advance learning opportunities for high school students, as well as contribute to technological enhancements to the John W. Anderson Library, according to a release.

The grants included:

? Forensic Scientists and Criminal Investigators Summer Camp: $21,250 Through this grant from Women’s Philanthropy Leadership Council, IU Foundation, IU Northwest’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) will host a weeklong Forensic Scientists and Criminal Investigators Summer Camp in 2024 for high school students.

? Steel City Black Knowledge Bowl: $7,750 Due to funding from The Black Philanthropy Circle, the Steel City Black Knowledge Bowl will now come to life next year, a release said. The event asks high school participants to demonstrate academic knowledge of the African Diaspora and its accomplishments in human history, while also increasing students’ sense of pride in themselves and the contributions of individuals like them, a release said.

? ALA Building Library Capacity Grant: $10,000 IU Northwest is one of 17 academic libraries nationwide to receive funding from the American Library Association’s Building Library Capacity Grant, a release said.

With the funding, the library will be able to better serve IU Northwest students, as well as community members through several enhancements, including the addition of a second Google Jamboard, the release said.

Munster job fair Thursday

The School Town of Munster will host a job fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 20, 2023 at the Administration Building, 8616 Columbia Ave., Munster.

According to a release, positions included in the fair include: bus aides, bus drivers, bus mechanics, classroom teachers, custodians, food service, instructional assistants, laptop technicians and substitute teachers.

United Way sets blood drive goal

The United Way of Northwest Indiana is teaming up team up with the American Red Cross-Northwest Chapter to collect at least 50 units of blood, which is enough to help almost 150 people, according to a release.

The blood drive will start at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the United Way office, 951 Eastport Center Drive, Valparaiso.

“It’s really staggering how much blood we need to collect to make sure we’re protecting our friends and neighbors across Lake and Porter counties,” President and CEO Adam O’Doherty said.

As an added incentive, donors will receive an exclusive Shark Week T-shirt, while supplies last, the release said.

New Sinai Forum season to include Daniels, Ross and others

The Purdue University Northwest (PNW) Sinai Forum has announced its 2023 speakers lineup including former governor Mitch Daniels and current Cubs manager David Ross to headline its 70th season, according to a release.

The season begins at 4 p.m. Sept. 17 with Daniels, the former President of Purdue University and two-term Indiana governor. Daniels, a Republican, prioritized affordability, while championing online education and technological advancements at Purdue, a release said.

In addition to Daniels, the series will feature journalists Jennifer Griffin and Benjamin Hall (Oct. 1); Dr. Bruce D. Perry, principal of Neurosequential Network (Oct. 15); geopolitical strategist and author Peter Zeihan (Nov. 5); author Anthony Ray Hinton (Nov. 19); and Ross (Dec. 3).

Tickets are available at pnw.edu/sinai-forum. This season will again provide both in-person and virtual viewing options, the release said. All Sinai Forum programs will be held at the James B. Dworkin Student Services and Activities Complex on PNW’s Westville branch campus, 1401 South U.S. 421, Westville.

Literacy coalition hosts wine tasting, food event Thursday

The Gary Literacy Coalition’s Summer Social takes place from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Art House: A Social Kitchen, 411 E. 5th Ave, Gary.

The wine tasting and food event costs $50 and will feature food from “Meal, Music and Muse,” a cookbook written by chef Alexander Smalls. His recipes will be paired with unique wines, according to a release.
