Two men accused of stealing wallets from customers of a Downers Grove retail store remain in DuPage County Jail where each is held on $100,000 bail, authorities said.

Officers arrested 51-year-old Chicago resident Steven Lares and Willie K. Hobbs, 47, of Aurora, at Savers Thrift Store about 4 p.m. on Feb 15, Downers Grove police said.

Police say employees of Savers, in the 2900 block of Highland Avenue, recognized the two from a series of earlier wallet thefts and called 911.

Minutes before, the two fled from a toy store in the 1400 block of Butterfield Road after a botched attempt at stealing a wallet from a woman’s purse, police said. The woman told police that Hobbs, of the 100 block of East Downer Place, distracted her while Lares took her wallet, police said. Lares dropped the wallet, and the woman noticed what was happening, police said.

After the woman told the two she planned to call security, Lares, of the 300 block of South Western Avenue, told her he was a security guard, police said. The two fled before security could stop them.

Each is charged with two counts of theft and one count of attempted theft – all felonies – according to records. They have not yet been assigned court dates.
