A 44-year-old Clarendon Hills man who reportedly called police from the scene of a traffic accident requesting an officer to prevent him from “shooting someone” faces a felony weapons charge, Downers Grove police said Monday.
Donald J. Sullivan, of the 00 to 100 block of Oxford Avenue, is charged with two counts of misdemeanor assault and one felony count of unlawful use of a weapon after the Friday evening road-rage incident, in which he pulled a gun on a motorist before crashing a pickup truck into that man’s vehicle, police said. Sullivan could not be reached for comment on Monday.
Police reports said Sullivan was driving westbound in Downers Grove, along Maple Avenue near Belmont Road, in a Chevy Silverado when he came to a stop at a traffic light and grew agitated with another motorist for an unknown reason.
He reportedly berated the motorist stopped alongside him in a Jeep Cherokee, Downers Grove police said.
The driver of the Jeep then got out and confronted him, police said. Sullivan responded by sliding a magazine into a semi-automatic handgun before pointing the weapon at both the driver and a passenger in the Jeep, according to police reports.
The two then exchanged angry words before the Jeep driver returned to his vehicle and both automobiles drove Westbound after the light turned green, police said.
As the driver attempted to write down Sullivan’s license plate and call 911, Sullivan pulled up behind him and swerved into the Jeep, hitting the vehicle’s right rear corner with the front of his pickup truck before the two vehicles screeched to a stop, police said.
After the crash, the two continued to exchange angry words in the street before both motorists phoned police, a report states. In a 911 call placed to the Downers Grove dispatch center, Sullivan allegedly requested police send the nearest officer to prevent him from shooting someone, the report states.
By the time officers responded, Sullivan’s gun was unloaded and holstered in his pick-up truck, a report states. Police said he showed them his FOID card and told officers he thought he was allowed to carry a gun if it was unloaded.
Sullivan was arrested after the incident, transported to DuPage County jail and released the same day after posting $1,000 bond.
Police seized Sullivan’s FOID card, a .40-caliber handgun, bullets and two ammunition magazines, a report states.
