The Northwest Symphony Orchestra will perform the second concert of the season on January 23, at 3:30 PM, in the Theatre for the Performing Arts at Maine West High School, 1755 S. Wolf Road in Des Plaines. Entitled “Musik of Vienna,” the concert will showcase music of late 18th century and 19th century Austrian and German composers. Featured soloist is Daniel Gingrich, Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Associate Principal French horn player making his second appearance with the NSO. Gingrich will perform Wolfgang Mozart’s popular Horn Concerto No. 3 in E-flat Major. Under the direction of Music Director and Conductor Paul Vermel, the orchestra will also perform Robert Schumann’s Symphony #3 (the “Rhenish”), Johann Strauss Sr.’s Radetzky March and Johann Strauss Jr.’s Emperor Waltzes.
Daniel Gingrich grew up in Stickney, Illinois. While studying with Richard Oldberg of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Gingrich was a member of the Chicago Youth Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. After attending Roosevelt University’s Chicago Musical College, he joined the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra of New York at the age of nineteen. He played with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington D.C. for one season before joining the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1975. In 2002, CSO Music Director Daniel Barenboim appointed Mr. Gingrich to the position of Associate Principal horn player. Mr. Gingrich is active as a soloist and chamber musician, and is a member of the Grammy Award-winning Chicago Pro Musica chamber ensemble. He is the horn coach for the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and has served as guest principal horn with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the China National Symphony in Beijing. He lives in Wilmette, Illinois with his wife, Mary, an artist and musician.
A pre-concert commentary will be presented one hour prior to the concert by Carolyn Paulin, a producer and program host at Chicago radio station WFMT 98.7.
Individual concert ticket prices are $20.00 for adults, $15.00 for seniors, and $10.00 for students. Children under age 14 are admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. The orchestra is also planning a fundraising gala on May 7, 2010 at the fabulous San Filippo estate in Barrington. The afternoon will feature a tour of the magnificent collection of antique music machines, chandeliers, art glass and other functional antiques, followed by a 60 minute performance on the fabulous 1927 Wurlitzer organ by world renown theater organist Jelani Eddington .
