Des Plaines seeks to fire 2 cops

Des Plaines wants to fire two police officers, who were placed on paid administrative leave last fall.

Acting City Manager Jason Slowinski filed charges with the city’s Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Feb. 16 against two patrol officers based upon information his office received, according to a news release. The two officers were placed on administrative leave last fall, though officials have released scant details. It is unclear who the individuals are, what they allegedly did, what ranks they hold or how long they have been employed with the department.

The officers have two options: they can proceed with a hearing held by the fire and police board, or pursue grievance arbitration per the collective bargaining agreement between the city the and the patrol officer’s union, Metropolitan Alliance of Police Chapter 240, the release stated.

A hearing with the fire and police board had yet to be scheduled as of Monday, said Art Lukowicz, chairman of the city’s fire and police board. In such hearings, the employees are represented by an attorney, as is the city and the board.

Within the next week or so, the three-person board will schedule a hearing to decide if the two officers would remain on paid administrative leave or change it to administrative leave without pay, Lukowicz said.

“This could drag out for awhile now with extensions and all,” said Lukowicz of potential future hearings. “It’s not something that happens quickly.”

The two officers have 21 days from when the charges were filed to decide what option they will take. If they elect the hearing route, the city’s Board of Fire and Police Commissioners must hold a hearing on the charges within 30 days.
