Des Plaines Theatre patrons may soon be able to sip a glass of wine or drink a cocktail while watching a show inside the historic vaudeville house.
If the City Council gives final approval to a liquor license for the entertainment venue later this month, the downtown theater could be selling alcohol shortly after, said owner Dhitu Bhagwakar. There’s no drink menu just yet, though the list will likely include beer, wine and cocktails, he added.
Theater-goers have asked when the establishment will start selling alcohol, which would be a good addition during evening and weekend shows, Bhagwakar said. He added he doesn’t know if the theater will sell beer or mixed drinks during children’s productions.
“I have to see how things go,” Bhagwakar said.
At a meeting this week, resident Brian Burkross said he was concerned about underage drinking and felt serving alcohol in a movie theater was a little unusual. Ald. Mark Walsten said many other area theaters sell alcohol and the venue will show all kinds of acts and performances, not just movies.
The bartender would be certified and the drinks would be sold before shows and during intermission, Bhagwakar added. The city has given the downtown staple various one-day liquor licenses for special events, like the theater’s grand re-opening and a recent viewing of the 1985 Superbowl.
If approved, the theater must initially pay $3,850 for the Class A Liquor License and then a $1,925 annual fee.
