The new president of the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce says he knows his one-year term will zoom by, but he still has some ideas that can help both the organization and the city.

Jeff Rozovics, a partner with Park Ridge-based Rozovics & Wojcicki, P.C., said his goal for 2012 is to send chamber members to City Council meetings to keep aldermen up to date on upcoming chamber events and developments. Rozovics said the organization hasn’t been too active with the council, but members will show up at least four times throughout the year, starting with his recent appearance at a January council gathering.

“I’m not trying to unveil this big aggressive agenda,” Rozovics, also a Des Plaines Public Library trustee, said of his one-year term. “Really my goal is to create awareness.”

Rozovics grew up in Park Ridge and graduated from Maine South High School. Though his office is in neighboring Park Ridge, he says he feels a strong connection to Des Plaines, where he lives with his wife and daughter. He’s been involved with the Des Plaines Chamber for about five years.

He said the decision to attend council meetings is not to lobby for specific businesses, but to bridge the connection between the two entities. Part of Rozovics’ interest in building a better partnership between the two stems from his library trustee position, which has helped him get to know aldermen and gain a better understanding of how the city works.

Though he’s unsure if the chamber has a formal internship program, Rozovics said he would also like local businesses to work closer with area colleges to make sure Des Plaines students are learning everything they can about the working world. He’s looking into ways now to make that happen.

“No matter if it’s Des Plaines or another community, there sometimes could be a disconnect with what you’re learning in class and in the real world,” he said.

Rozovics said he’s proud of the current programs assembled by the chamber, many which partner with the Des Plaines Park District, Des Plaines History Center and Frisbee Senior Center. One new event this year will bring together the community at Maryville Academy for a game of bags while another will pick the brains of past chamber presidents to gather constructive feedback and new ideas.

“Hopefully in the future years this carries out as well,” Rozovics said of his efforts. “I just want to do the best I can.”
