A 24-year-old Des Plaines man who is on parole will appear in Skokie court Oct. 14 after he allegedly damaged and stole from at least four cars, though he claims he doesn’t remember how it happened.

Police said they heard two loud crashes in a parking lot near Thacker and Dempster Streets around midnight Sept. 2 and saw Michael Z. Passev, of the 1600 block of Mill Street, walking away from a Jeep and carrying three packages of Marlboro cigarettes. At least four cars in the lot had been burglarized, reports said.

Authorities allege he was walking around for no reason and as officers patted him down, they noticed his pockets were weighed down with coins and held another 100-pack of cigarettes that was half-empty.

Passev is a known burglar in the area and has been arrested at least a half a dozen times by Des Plaines police, said Cmdr. Nick Treantefeles. He served prison time for a residential burglary and is on parole, but it was not immediately known when he was released or how long he was in jail, Treantefeles added.

When officers found a gray key fob in his pocket, Passev allegedly responded, “What the (expletive) is that. I don’t even own a car. That’s not mine.” He also allegedly was carrying two key rings with keys and Blockbuster ID tags, four cigarette lighters, and a car plug cigarette lighter, among more cash and coins, reports said.

According to police reports, Passev allegedly said he blacked out after drinking two tall glasses of straight vodka, but it looked like he done something wrong, and he was really sorry. He was charged with theft, criminal damage to property and criminal trespassing to vehicle.
