A furnace cap popped off this afternoon in the Des Plaines Theater, sending soot everywhere and triggering the fire alarms, officials said.

Four fire trucks and two ambulances surrounded the theater on the 1400 block of Miner Street before 3 p.m., but no one was injured. The fire alarms were new,  said Gay Miezin, who has been managing the theater renovations.

“It was definitely not how we wanted to test the system,” she said.

A worker was checked out and released at the scene, a fire official said.
