A Highland Park electric company is suing Deerfield-based Wonder!, alleging the 135,000-square-foot children’s megastore owes nearly $70,000 for work that allowed the store to open on time last year.
Lovering Electric Company filed a complaint Feb. 2 in the Cook County Circuit Court that claims Wonder! owes the company for electrical remodeling and installation, which allowed the store to obtain a certificate of occupancy from the village of Deerfield.
Lovering’s attorney, Chicago-based Stephen Milott said workers rushed to renovate the store, at 250 S. Waukegan Road, within 60 days so Wonder! could open before Christmas and take advantage of the holiday shopping season.
Lovering began work in September while Wonder! owners made partial payments, he said.
“Shortly after receipt of the Certificate Of Occupancy by Wonder!…all payments still remaining due to Lovering Electric stopped,” according to the complaint.
“At that point, (Wonder!) didn’t need Lovering anymore,” Milott said.
Milott said he’ll also be asking for punitive damages in excess of $1 million.
Wonder!’s owner, Lake Forest resident Shane Christensen, was not immediately available for comment.
Wonder! opened in October. The megastore–with its children’s car test track, 100 varieties of strollers, a half-acre play area, 20-foot-tall trees, 10 classrooms and 1,600-square-foot baby registry area, Wonder! was touted by Christensen as a one-of-its-kind retail store; a one-stop shop for parents who want specialty boutique products.
Deerfield officials said they were excited about Wonder! because it filled a big space that has been vacant for years after the departure of Great Indoors, a home decor store, that had closed a number of stores across the region.
To sweeten the pot for Wonder!, the village extended tax breaks. If Wonder! exceeds $25 million in annual sales, it would receive up to $1 million in rebated sales taxes over a five-year period.
