The Deerfield village board has unanimously approved banning the use of handheld cell phones while driving.
The ban officially goes into effect Nov. 1, but police would likely give out warning tickets during the first few weeks, officials said. The law does not apply to drivers who use hands-free headsets.
Tickets would start at $120, but could go up to as much as $500, based on the severity and the number of offenses, officials said.
Earlier this year, neighboring Highland Park narrowly passed a similar cell phone ban in a 4-3 vote. Those against the ban there thought it didn’t go far enough, saying they wanted to also ban hands-free headsets. The law went into effect June 1; fines are $120 for each offense.
Chicago, Evanston, Glencoe, and Winnetka have similar bans.
