The Kids4Good2 group, from Mark DeLay School in Darien, spent their final meeting of the year dedicating their newly planted “Peace Garden” to their retiring Principal, Ms. Maureen Kelly. The group had spent the days prior to the dedication, collecting and planting, with special love and care, their garden of Peace – A way the children of Kids4Good2 chose to show their appreciation for her 35 years of service to Distict #61.
In addition to the garden dedication, Ms. Kelly was presented with a special keepsake peace sign from all the children along with a one-of-a-kind Peace MasterPiece painted specially by Vinny Provenzano, one of leader Dena Provenzanos four children.
As their website, www.kids4good.org, states – Kids4Good2 is a special group of 2nd graders started this year at Mark DeLay by Dena Provenzano, performing many good deeds as their sister group Kids4Good, powered by younger but equally enthusiastic little citizens.
Ms. Kelly supported the establishment of this 2nd grade edition of the club this year and they met throughout the school year starting in November to join forces with Kids4Good to collect and deliver Thanksgiving Meals, Winter Coats and Magazines for our Troops.
Separately the group tackled some very grown-up projects on their own. Their most major initiative for the year was what they called Kiss Away Leukemia, which they organized to raise funds/awareness for a classmates mother who recently battled and survived this disease and will be walking the Grand Canyon this month for Leukemia research.
Other Kids4Good2 projects involved welcoming visiting soldiers to meet with the group, celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. with a special Pizza Party and supporting Hospice families for Christmas.
This first year introducing our younger students to the concept of performing good deeds for others proved to be very good indeed!
