Dr. Michael J. Campbell emigrated from a fishing village in Ireland to Chicago, where he graduated from high school and got his medical degree before shipping off to the South Pacific during World War II to care for the wounded and soldiers felled by tropical diseases.

Back home, he set up a pediatric practice, initially on the South Side and later in Evergreen Park, soothing young patients with his gentle Irish brogue for more than three decades.

“After arriving in America, he hit the ground running,” said his son, Dan, also a pediatrician. “He was definitely one of the Greatest Generation. His life was all about taking care of people.”

Dr. Campbell, 99, who worked as a staff pediatrician at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park into his late 70s, died of natural causes Monday, Jan. 23, in his Darien home.
