The McHenry County College Conference Center has been renamed in honor of a family that has donated more than $1 million to the Crystal Lake-based institution.
During a private dedication ceremony last week, the 350-seat facility was named the Luecht Conference Center to recognize Mike and Judy Luecht of Lake in the Hills for their efforts in helping fund scholarship programs at the community college.
The family donated $1 million to the Promise program in 2008, and has also contributed to the Women in Transition scholarship.
The Promise program offered two years paid tuition if certain requirements were met beginning in the fall of 2009. Having run its course, officials are now discussing whether to move forward with a similar program.
“Without their support for the Promise program, the program might not have moved forward, and the college might not be where it is today,” President Vicky Smith said in a press release. “Their support of the Promise (program) was reflective of their own belief in the importance of a college education and making that education as accessible as possible to anyone who has sought it.”
Officials declined to release the exact amount that has been donated at the request of the family.
The conference center hosts hundreds of events each year, which varies from the county spelling bee to political debates.
