Crystal Lake School District 47 appears to be the big winner during Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford’s two-day cash dash tour in the northern collar counties.

The state treasurer visited Crystal Lake Wednesday as a part of the program, which is designed to reunite people with their unclaimed property. When a bank or business has money owed to people that they can’t find, those funds are turned over to the treasurer’s office.

Rutherford was able to find more than $14,000 for District 47 through an online search Wednesday. That day, 11 of the 20 people searched were found to have funds being held by the state.

“People are always thrilled to find out they have money just waiting for them through cash dash, especially this week for Crystal Lake School District 47,” Rutherford said. “I encourage area residents to come visit me at local cash dash events for assistance in locating their money or property.”

In total, 499 people were assisted with searches at 10 different locations, including Libertyville, Grayslake, Round Lake, Wauconda, Lake Zurich, Crystal Lake, Algonquin, Carpentersville, Elgin and St. Charles. Of that number, 148 people found one or more claims.

“Everyone should make an attempt to review our online database annually so they don’t miss out on money or valuable assets the state is holding for them,” Rutherford said.

The treasurer’s unclaimed property division has $1.5 billion in cash, plus contents from Illinois bank safety deposit boxes that have been abandoned for at least five years.
