Motorcyclist in fatal crash was drunk, test finds

Chicago Tribune

A former Crystal Lake South High School football star had a blood-alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit when he died in a motorcycle crash this month, according to test results released Monday by the McHenry County coroner’s office.

Toxicology test results showed a blood-alcohol content of 0.214 percent for Trent Steckel, 24, who died after an early morning crash July 2. The legal limit is 0.08 percent.

Steckel, a 2004 Crystal Lake South graduate and Woodstock firefighter in training, died after suffering blunt-force head and chest trauma after striking a culvert on Live Oak Road, just south of Spy Glass Ridge Road in Crystal Lake.
