Celebrate the 80th Birthday of Nancy Drew at the Clarendon Hills Library

Though she doesn’t look a day over 16, Nancy Drew, the iconic girl detective, has been around since 1930.  The Clarendon Hills Library, 7 North Prospect Avenue, is celebrating this milestone with “Nancy Drew Days,” a week-long series of events, programs and activities.

Girls in grades four through six and their mothers are invited to a mother/daughter book discussion of The Clue in the Diary (Nancy Drew #7) on Saturday, September 25th, 2-3 pm.  A craft activity will follow.

On Monday, September 27th at 7 pm, the library presents “Solve the Mystery of Nancy Drew’s History,” a behind the scenes look at Nancy through the years including all the ghost writers who wrote under the Carolyn Keene name, a look at how the girl sleuth is portrayed in other cultures, plus some fun with Nancy Drew trivia.

“Nancy Drew and the Media” includes screenings of two Nancy Drew movies plus episodes of two different TV series that featured the girl detective.  Monday, September, 27th at 7:45 pm the library presents the 1938 film Nancy Drew: Detective.  On Tuesday, September 28th beginning at 7 pm, episodes from both the 1970’s and 1990’s Nancy Drew television series will be shown, and the series closes on Thursday, September 30th at 7 pm with the 2007 film Nancy Drew.

On Saturday, October 2nd, the library will present “What to Do with Your Old Nancy Drew Books (or any book)”, an “altered books” workshop for ages 12 up to adult.  Participants will learn how to turn an old book into a work of art, a purse or a mini-drawer.

Finally, each day of the week of September 27th, visitors to the library can win a small prize by solving a Nancy Drew-style mystery.  Stop by for details.

Please call the library at 630-323-8188 to register for the Mother/Daughter book discussion, Nancy Drew history program, and altered books workshop.  For more information, log on to www.clarendonhillslibrary.org.
