FAMILY READING DAY: READING IS A GIFT AND A PLEASURE

Family Reading Day was presented at Anne M. Jeans Elementary School and at Burr Ridge Middle School in the Community Consolidated School District #180, Burr Ridge, IL, on Wednesday, February 15, 2012. Nationally known author of Childrens’ and Young Adults’ literature, Dr. Steven Layne spoke and conducted workshops for parents, teachers and students throughout the day. Dr. Deb LeBlanc, Cathe Smith, Rene DeGuzman, Linda Adcock and Julie Bartell organized the event. All are associated with District 180 and are members of Beta Phi Chapter of DKG. The event was funded by CCSD 180, Beta Phi, Walmart, Lambda State Foundation for Education, Target, and Costco. Donations of books were received in partnership with Tate Woods Elementary School in Lisle School District #202 and community organizations in Burr Ridge and Hinsdale. Each of the 399 students received a free donated book of their own to take home.
Guest readers included volunteers from the community including AXA Financial representatives under the direction of Kyle Zake; CCSD 180 Staff members; a representative from the DuPage County Sheriff’s department; members of Beta Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a National Honorary Women Teachers’ Society; and therapy dogs and their handlers.
