Summer Reading Day at Buffalo Grove to Engage Students and Staff in Literary Discussion

The entire student body at Buffalo Grove High School will migrate to selected classrooms on Friday, Sept. 3, to discuss a variety of books chosen for this year’s Summer Reading Program.  The annual event will involve all students–freshmen to seniors–and will be facilitated by teachers, administrators, support staff, and even a substitute teacher, Lim DePriest, who co-wrote one of the books on the list with retired BGHS English teacher, Joyce Norman.  The goal is to keep students reading throughout the summer, ready to review and share observations with their fellow classmates in early fall.  The group discussions enable staff to determine which students have read, absorbed, and comprehend their chosen books.  Students receive credit for their participation.

This year’s title options included the following: The Help by Kathryn Stockett, Deadline by Chris Crutcher, Acceleration by Graham McNamee, The Carbon Diaries 2015 by Saci Lloyd,

Downtown Owl by Chuck Klosterman, Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home and School by John Medina, Can’t Get There from Here by Todd Strasser, Promise Me by Harlan Coben, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Tears of a Tiger by Sharon Draper, Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut, With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa by E.B. Sledge, Travels with Charley by John Steinbeck, Growing Up Ebony and Ivory by Lim DePriest and Joyce Norman, Animal Farm by George Orwell, Give a Boy a Gun by Todd Strasser, Breaking Through by Francisco Jimenez, and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.

According to BGHS Summer Reading Program Coordinator, Robin Paul, local bookstores in the area were made aware of the summer reading titles last school year, in order to meet the demand, as were local libraries.  As in the past, this year’s event is expected to be a successful, enjoyable event for all.
