Fans of the Long Grove Apple Haus have had their last taste of its signature cider and donuts after the village staple announced it was closing for good.

In an announcement on the bakery’s Facebook page, an official said the decision to close was a hard one to make.

“We have remained open as long as we could, but in today’s economic climate we have been forced to close the Apple Haus,” the post read.

The business shut down in December and a post then said it would be closed for inventory, but customers were suspicious.

Since the announcement, fans have been flooding the Facebook page with mourning messages and fond memories of the establishment, which has served apple-infused baked goods for more than 40 years in the historic Long Grove village.

Nobody answered the phone at the Apple Haus or the Long Grove Business and Community Partners on Tuesday.

How this will affect the village’s annual fall Apple Festival remains to be seen. At the various Long Grove festivals, lines would often snake out the door and around the building so people could get their hands on the baked goods.

A post from the business on Facebook said they hope to return for festivals.

Long Grove Mayor Maria Rodriguez was not immediately available for comment.

The business will continue to offer frozen pies and Chef Ivo products at the Long Grove Confectionery. The frozen pies will also be available at the outlet store in Buffalo Grove, Angelo Caputo’s Fresh Markets and can be ordered through Lou Malnati’s and Oberweiss.

In the same Facebook post announcing its closing, the company urged people to stop into a local business.

“Please continue to support the small businesses in your area so that they don’t meet the same fate that we did,” the post read.
