OTB will once again serve food, liquor

Buffalo Grove’s off-track betting facility will be able to serve food and alcohol again, following a two-month hiatus.

The Hawthorne Racecourse OTB has remained open as a stand-alone betting facility since the restaurant that shared the site, Adam’s Rib and Ale House, went out of business this fall.

The owners of the OTB at 301 N. Milwaukee Ave. have been aggressively looking for a new location and hope to find one within 90 days, though it could be as much as a year, said Deputy Village Manager Ghida Neukirch.

Until then, Progressive Management, which runs the banquet facility at the Arboretum Club, will step in as a caterer to provide food and alcohol. Progressive has a liquor license to serve alcohol at that location.

The Village Board awarded Progressive with a Class I license, which allows them to cater food and liquor for an annual fee of $200. The liquor must be part of a meal, however, and cannot be served alongside light snacks.

Though they are seeking the license in order to provide services at the OTB, the license effectively grants them the ability to cater anywhere in the village.

Due to the village’s positive relationship with Progressive Management in the village-owned Arboretum Club, President Jeff Braiman had no problem granting the license.

But Trustee Andrew Stein said he could not support awarding a liquor license under such circumstances, where they are receiving the license to serve that specific location.

The board voted 4-2 to allow the catering license, with trustees Beverly Sussman and Stein voting against.
