Atmosphere electric in Raiders win at McDonald’s Shootout

Next month, girls powerhouse basketball teams Bolingbrook and Montini will play more important games when the postseason rolls around. But on Monday night, the top-ranked and defending champion Class 4A and 3A teams in the state battled in front of a loud crowd of more than 3,000 fans at Willowbrook High School in the 21st McDonald's Shootout. Bolingbrook, the Class 4A power, beat Montini, 79-63, in a wild and physical battle to close out the 17-game, three-day showcase. Because of the class difference, these teams will not face each other in postseason play, but this game had the feel of a playoff game. "This is more intense than the state finals because this is in a smaller gym as opposed to a college arena," said Montini's Whitney Adams, a Naperville resident who had 22 points including six 3-pointers in the setback. "Everything is condensed and so loud. It's a lot of fun knowing that if you make a shot the whole crowd will go crazy and you can't help but to smile." Bolingbrook is ranked first in the area by the Tribune. The Raiders improved to 13-2 and have not lost to a team from Illinois since the state championship game in 2008. Montini (23-1) entered this year’s battle ranked third in the area by the Tribune and has also made some national polls. "What a great atmosphere," said Bolingbrook's Ariel Massengale, who had 20 points and four assists. "Everyone is right there - almost right on the court. We didn't get into the hype or the audience - we just played our game."
