Batavia Chamber of Commerce Steps Up to Host September’s Annual Fox Valley Volunteer Fair.

Since 2002, Fox Valley residents have donated countless hours to area agencies and nonprofit groups who count on the annual Fox Valley Volunteer Fair to attract helpers. This year’s event is planned for Saturday, September 18 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., and will be held at the Batavia Public Library, 10 South Batavia Avenue, Batavia.

The Batavia Chamber of Commerce is hosting the September event, which is a departure from previous years, says Patti Lackman, member of Batavia Chamber of Commerce and the League of Women Voters. According to Lackman, the fair was originally created by the League of Women Voters of Batavia as a call to action from the League of Women Voters of the United States (LWV of US); in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Since that time the group, under the guidance of Barbara King, has promoted community volunteerism and involvement by hosting the fair. Because the Batavia group recently merged with Geneva and St. Charles chapters, the Volunteer Fair’s status was in jeopardy. Batavia Chamber of Commerce stepped in to take over this important community event.

“We sincerely thank Barbara King and the League for this great service,” says Roger Breisch, executive director of Batavia Chamber of Commerce. “We are pleased to ensure that this important community activity continues.”

Area nonprofit groups and agencies that depend on volunteer support are encouraged to contact the Chamber to apply for a booth. Over 40 area nonprofit groups and agencies are present each year. Interested groups are encouraged to call the Chamber at 630-879-7134 for more information and to register by Friday, September 10.

Alternatively, area residents who can spare some time are invited to mark their calendars and plan to attend. Potential volunteers will not only learn a lot about the myriad of creative groups making a difference in the area; they can also sign up for raffle prizes, including two iPods, and enjoy light refreshments.

“If you have a few minutes each month…or a few hours…and would like to give back to the community, please join us on September 18,” says Breisch. “You’ll be able to identify where your passion fulfills the community’s great need.”

You are needed; attend the Fox Valley Volunteer Fair to find out where.
