Off-duty cop shoots passenger in hit-run car on Fermilab property

The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting Saturday morning on the Fermilab grounds in Batavia that involved an off-duty police officer, officials said Sunday.

The incident began when the officer witnessed a hit-and-run crash near Illinois Highway 59 and Dale Avenue in West Chicago, according to a sheriff’s news release. The officer followed the vehicle in a personal car, the release said.

The officer confronted the occupants on Fermilab property and fired shots at the hit-and-run vehicle, according to the release.

One passenger in the back seat was struck and taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva. The person who was shot was in stable condition Sunday, the hospital said.

As of Sunday, no charges had been filed, officials said.
