Algonquin man dies in crash on way home from visiting wife in hospital

A 55-year-old Algonquin man, who was headed home after visiting his wife in the hospital, died Wednesday night of injuries suffered in a two-car accident at an intersection in Barrington Hills.

Joseph Kwak, of the 2000 block of Carlisle Street, left his wife at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington and was headed home to get her toothbrush and pillow, when he ran a red light at Haeger’s Bend and Lake Cook roads at about 8:05 p.m. and his car hit by an SUV,  Lake County Deputy Coroner Kathy Needham said.

Kwak was taken to the same hospital where his wife was being treated, Needham said. He was pronounced dead at 8:58 p.m., she said.

According to a news release from the Barrington Hills Police Department, which did not identify Kwak, he was driving a 2001 Nissan Altima, heading south on Haegers Bend Road and crossed over Lake Cook Road. He was struck by a 2004 Jeep Liberty heading west on the road.

Police, responding to the accident at about 8:07 p.m., found the Nissan with extensive front-end and driver’s side damage, off the road at the southwest corner of the intersection.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the the crash, though results of toxicology tests are not done, the release said.

The driver of the Jeep, a 32-year-old Algonquin woman and her 2-year-old daughter were taken to the hospital with injuries considered not life threatening. The Jeep also had significant front end damage.

The intersection was closed for about three hours while police with assistance from the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team investigated the fatal car crash.  The investigation is ongoing, the release said.

Motorists who witnessed the crash are asked to call the Investigations Division of the Barrington Hills Police Department at 847-551-3006.
