Village leaders could vote Monday on an ordinance that would impose restrictions on the ways homeowners can light their property. It is billed as an ecological and aesthetic balm that will deter garishly illuminated properties and ensure a velvety night sky for stargazers.

But a vocal opposition claims the measure is an unwarranted intrusion onto their private property, a sop to environmentalists and astronomy lovers that would leave many vulnerable to burglary and encourage residents to become snitches.
