Artists of all ages who like to sketch with chalk are encouraged to use sidewalks near a Barrington mall and downtown as their canvas during the second annual chalk festival that runs through Friday.

“It’s absolutely great fun,” said Janet Meyer, president and chief executive officer of the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce, which is sponsoring the event. 

Spectators or passersby can view the artwork on sidewalks near the Ice House Mall and Village Shops, 200 Applebee Street, and in downtown Barrington along Main Street. The event is part of sidewalk days in downtown Barrington, along Route 14 and the Foundry.

Meyer said she took the chalk concept from a similar event in Newport Beach, Calif. and customized it to fit in with sidewalk days.

“We’re hoping that (chalk art) goes all the way down to Main Street.  It’s another opportunity to connect the shoppers to various shopping districts in the village of Barrington,” Meyer said.  She said the festival last year drew 39 artists.

There will be judging for Best in Show of various ages – 8 and under,  9 to 14, 15 to 18 and, for a family or group of people who sketch together.

Judging will take place at 3 p.m. Friday and winners, who will receive a $25 mall gift certificate, will be announced at the main entrance of the mall.  

Lauren Debrauwere, who coordinated this year’s chalk festival, said the turnout Thursday was lively, with her helping watch over children as parents shop.  So far, sidewalks have been turned into Harry Potter, ocean and mountain scenes, she said.

“People are very enthusiastic.  It gives the kids a chance to creatively express themselves,” she said.  

Registration to participate in the free event is required.  Visit www.barringtonchamber.com or, a tent outside the mall to register.  The first 50 participants receive a free box of pastel chalk.
