Artful dodgers: Kids learn dodgeball from firefighters

Starting Friday school days with dodgeball is a tradition for Aurora Christian School kids.

But on Friday, Feb. 10, ACS kids learned some dodgeball lessons from special guest teachers—the Aurora Fire Department dodgeball team, the 2011 World Police and Fire Games dodgeball champions.

Scott Etchison, ACS principal, warmed up ACS first through fifth graders with dodgeball competition among themselves in the main gym from 7:30 to 8 a.m.

At 8 a.m., Etchison welcomed the seven-man AFD dodgeball team. After they were introduced, the athletes gave kids tips on the sport and joined them in pelting each other with soft, multicolored balls.

AFD athletes donating their time and energy were: Aaron Calhoun, Aurora firefighter truck 6; Mike Kaufman, firefighter, truck 6; Jason Mosshamer, firefighter/paramedic, medic truck 10; Matt Acuff, firefighter/paramedic, medic truck 1; Dick Dahleen, firefighter/paramedic, medic truck 5; Kevin Hoffman, firefighter, truck 2; Jason Equi, firefighter/paramedic, medic truck 3; and Mike McDevitt, firefighter/paramedic, North Aurora Fire Department.
