The nearly 50-year-old Children’s Theatre of Winnetka takes audiences flying over the rooftops of London in their whimsical production of “Mary Poppins,” opening Thursday, Nov. 16 through Nov. 19.
This massive show, according to CTW’s Artistic Director Aaron Umsted, features 90 actors with two casts of 45 each representing larger numbers than ever before. The production is supported by an all-volunteer community stage crew, including board members, parents and alumni totaling well over 100.
“We actually consider ourselves one big family, and the overriding themes in ‘Mary Poppins’ focus on love of family, believing in oneself and in the idea that anything is possible,” Umsted said.
Based on the book by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, “Mary Poppins” is a Tony Award winning musical.
Organizers say CTW’s Mary Poppins in Winnetka is a charming mixture of irresistible story, unforgettable songs, breathtaking dance numbers, and astonishing stagecraft, offering classic renditions of songs, “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”
According to a Children’s Theatre of Winnetka news release, “Mary Poppins” is the story of the Banks family who live at number 17 Cherry Tree Lane in London and are in desperate need of a nanny for their children. When an enchanting young woman named Mary Poppins appears at their doorstep, she becomes the answer to their prayers — taking the children on memorable adventures and teaching the entire family important lessons.
Umsted says he was a part of the First National Tour of the Broadway production of “Mary Poppins” performed at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago.
“I know the musical very well and have a deep connection to it,” Umsted said.
14-year-old Angelina Rouse of Winnetka says playing Mary Poppins is a dream role for her.
“I love working with younger kids and I’d like to be a teacher someday, so this role gives me a chance to find out what it means to be a role model,” Rouse said.
Michael Satriano of Winnetka plays Burt and says this role differs from others that he has played.
“Burt is a storyteller and playing him gives me a chance to show my creative side,” Satriano said.
Harriet Otto of Wilmette, plays Winifred Banks.
“I love the magic and whimsy of the production and how Mary Poppins inspires my character to become a powerful woman and to stick to her beliefs,” Otto said.
Performances take place in Matz Hall at the Winnetka Community House at 620 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka. Tickets for reserved seats can be purchased at www.childrenstheatrewinnetka.com.
